A classic beanie knitted in the round with 2x2 ribbing and neat crown decreases.
This design is intended for head circumferences of 46-56 cm (18-22 inches). The ribbing allows it to stretch and adapt to the wearer: the hat will fit snugly on medium to large heads and more loosely (with extra height) on smaller heads.
Add this design to Favourites in your Ravelry profile: Classic Beanie 2x2.
15 stitches and 23 rows = 10 cm (4 in) in stockinette stitch (unblocked).
Cast on 72 stitches (or any multiple of 8) using the long-tail cast-on method or your preferred method. To adjust the circumference, add or subtract 8 stitches and follow the rest of the instructions to maintain the same crown shaping.
Join to work in the round, place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round, and ensure your chosen right side is on the inside of the loop. This way, when the brim is folded, the right side will be visible.
Work in 2x2 ribbing (k2, p2) in the round until the piece measures 26 cm (10.2 in) or the desired length.
Row 1: Purl 2 stitches together (P2tog) in every purl pair; knit stitches as they appear (54 sts remain).
Row 2: Knit the stitches as they appear.
Row 3: Knit 2 stitches together (K2tog) in every knit pair; purl stitches as they appear (36 sts remain).
Row 4: Knit the stitches as they appear.
Row 5: Knit 2 stitches together (K2tog) across the round (18 sts remain).
Row 6: Knit 2 stitches together (K2tog) across the round (9 sts remain).
Cut the yarn, leaving a 1.5m (60 in) tail, and thread it through a tapestry needle.
Pass the yarn through the remaining stitches once or twice, pull tight to close the top of the hat, secure the yarn, and weave in the ends.
