A chain that begins with the seed and adds value at every stage

Algodón de Frontera is our agroecological cotton yarn from the No´Oxonec – Algodón de Frontera initiative, developed together with Indigenous and small farming families in Chaco, Argentina.

A fiber shaped by family farming, biodiversity, local knowledge, and value created at origin.

No´Oxonec: An initiative that began in 2012

The story began with Qom communities working to restore farming systems affected by the use of agrochemicals in neighboring fields.

A few years later, cotton became part of that journey. In 2017, the first agroecological cotton crops were planted using locally preserved, non-GMO seeds, recovering a practice deeply connected to Chaco’s agricultural identity.

Today, the initiative brings together Indigenous and small farming families from Pampa del Indio, Presidencia Roca, J. J. Castelli, Las Palmas, and La Leonesa.

The seed as a starting point

One of the greatest strengths of this initiative is the preservation of its locally adapted seed stock.

Saving these seeds makes it possible to plant again each season, maintain greater independence in production, and keep alive knowledge shared within the communities themselves.

Their preservation is part of a broader approach that seeks to strengthen biodiversity and local farming systems.

Value created at origin

No´Oxonec works to keep as much of the transformation process as possible within the province.

Growing, harvesting, ginning, spinning, weaving, and design all involve local people and organizations. In this way, value is created at different stages before the fiber reaches us.

For HUANACO, being part of this chain means continuing that work while keeping the origin of the raw material and the people involved in its transformation visible.

Agroecological cotton

Agroecology promotes farming systems that aim to be environmentally sustainable, socially fair, and economically viable.

It is not only about farming without synthetic inputs. It also means caring for biodiversity, strengthening farming communities, and building systems that can be sustained over time.

In Algodón de Frontera, this approach is part of the fiber’s story from the very beginning.

Our Algodón de Frontera Collection

We chose to keep the project’s name as a way of recognizing and supporting the families and organizations behind this initiative.

At HUANACO, we receive the yarn in its natural color and develop our palette with natural dyes, working by hand in small batches.

In this way, we continue adding value to a fiber whose journey began long before it reached our mill.

How to care for your Algodón de Frontera

Hand wash whenever possible, or use a gentle cycle with cold water and a neutral detergent. Avoid wringing and allow it to dry naturally to help preserve the structure of the fiber and the finished piece.
